THE CANTERBURY TALES   is a collection of 24 Stories written  in middle English  . These  Tales are told by a group of pilgrims during a pilgrimage to the shrine of saint Thomas  Beckett  , a martyr  at Canterbury  cathedral , a sacred pilgrim centre for the medieval  Christians. There are 32 people including 30 pilgrims the owner of an Inn and a Canon's  yeoman  These pilgrims represent different sections  of society  drawn from both the religious  and the secular life they are a Knight  his son , his servant  , a nun , a monk , a wanton  , a merchant , a clerk  , a lawyer  , a Franklin  , a carpenter  , a Weaver  , a Dyer  , a tapestry  , a cook  , a sailer , a physician  , a wife , a preist , a plowman ,a reeve , a Miller  , a summoner  , a pardoner , a manciple , a poet , a haberdasher  , a manciple , a frair and a cannon 



The CanteCanter Tales stands as a historical  and sociological  introduction  to the lives and times of the medieval  society  . This society  included  a wide Spectrum  of various  ranks and occupations  . Chaucer had the advantage  of being acquainted with court life . As a commoner , Chaucer  was familiar  with people of all ranks and professions with the lower classes and the higher classes Tus , he was able to observe both and record  them in this work
