GEOFFREY CHAUCER IS THE MAJOR WRITER OF THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD ENGLISH LITERATURE HE IS CONSIDERED AS THE " FATHER OF THE MODERN SECULAR ENGLISH POETRY "  

CHAUCER  LITERARY CAREER CAN BE STUDIED IN THREE PHASES :

  • FROM A PERIOD OF FRENCH INFLUENCE  (LATE 1360's )
  • THROUGH HIS MIDDLE PERIOD OF BOTH FRENCH AND ITALIAN INFLUENCES        ( DURING 1370's AND 1380's )
  • TO THE LAST PERIOD OF HIS INDEPENDENT USE OF ENGLISH ( 1380's AND LATER )
CHAUCER HAD A RELAXED , INQUISITIVE  NATURE THAT LED HIM TO ANALYSE HUMAN BEINGS AND THEIR ATTITUDES WITH SYMPATHY , AMUSEMENT AND IRONY THE IMPORTANT WORKS OF CHAUCER ARE : 

1. THE BAKE OF THE DUCHESSE 

2. THE PARLIAMENT OF FOULS

3. TROILUS AND CRYSEYDE 

4. THE HOUSE OF FAME 

5. THE LEGEND OF GOD WOMEN 

6.THE CANTERBURY TALES 

AMONG THESE  , THE CANTERBURY TALES IS SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE IT MADE HIM VERY POPULAR IN THE MEDEIVAL TIMES
