Aristotle And His Views On Tragedy

 Aristotle is the second figure in the classical age of literary criticism. He is one of the greatest ancient philosopher. Aristotle was a disciple of Great Writer Plato and the teacher of great Emperor Alexander. the greatest works of Aristotle are poetics and rhetoric. the poetics contains 26 small chapters which are talking about poetry, comedy, tragedy and so on. especially in the poetics, he outlines tragedy, the tragic hero and the Three unities. these three unities are the unity of time, another unity of place, finally unity of action. it determines that the like all poetry is a kind of imitation (Mimesis).



 Definition Of Tragedy 

Tragedy is a type of a imitation of an action that is serious, complete and of a certain magnitude, in language and embelished with each kind of artistic ornament,  the several kinds being found in separate parts of the playd in the form of action.

Elements Of Tragedy 

Aristoltle presents six elements of tragedy in their importance of tgheir importance ecpanding a little on the signifiocance of each to the tragedy as a whole. they are :

1. Plot         2. Chracter            3. Thought
4. Diction   5. Song/Melody   6. Spectacle

1. Plot :- tragedy is the first and foremost representation of actions the tragic effect comes from the plot and especially from the peripeteia. in which the characters find themselves as well as from scenes of recognition Aristotle considers plot as the soul of tragedy. the tragic plot must have a certain magnitude or length divides the tragic plot into simple and complex. in simple plot the change in fortunes of hero takes place without peripety the complex plot involves one or The Other or both.

2. Chracter :-  character is second important element or component of tragedy after plot.  characters represent their moral qualities through the speeches.  according to Aristotle the characters must be good but not perfect secondly the characters must be appropriate  thirdly they must have likeness  it means the characters must be like at last they must have consistency in development there must be no sudden strange in character specially Aristotle says that the tragic Hero should not be perfectly good or at early bad.

3. Thought :- thought is the power of saying what can be said or what is suitable to the occasion.  it is the language which gives us the thoughts and feelings of various characters there should be a proper relationship between thought and situation.

 4. Diction :- diction has already been defined as the metrical composition of the play  the way language is used to convey the Representation it refers to the  expression of meaning in the words or it is a primary mode of imitating of an action.

5. Song/Melody :-  song is particularly refer to the song sung by a group of people known as chorus it includes analysis of the major events of the past present and what will happen in the future.

 6. Spectacle :- spectacle means the scene used in drama for the sake of emotional attraction of the audience it highlights the emotional significance of an event in the drama.
