The Collar Poem Summary:-
George Herbert was an English poet band priest of the church in England. his poetry is associated with the writings of them, metaphysical poets. and he is recognized as "one of the foremost British devotional lyricists the collar is one of the best-loved poems of Herbert and it demonstrates the aspects of rebellion against religion and social expectation. and the poem shows the poet is in a struggle with his own soul.
In the opening line, Herbert writes " I struck the board and cried no more" the opening stanza is a complaint voiced by a person against the constraints that bind him. he was not satisfied with his condition, therefore, he wants freedom. the metaphor like 'cage' which Herbert explains his restrictions have a double meaning. but the deeper meaning is what Herbert shouts from the begging is the results of petty thoughts.
one of the most interesting aspects of the poem is its title. throughout the poem, we didn't find the word 'collar' this word has a different meaning. that means a band if leather that surrounds an animal neck or a slave collar because Herbert thinks of himself as a slave to the lord the poet compares his own restrained life to the free life of other people who enjoy worldly pleasure. he argues that he also has the right to crown himself with the best of life and enjoy flowers and garlands. the poet's thoughts show the reflection of fury toward god. and his creation. it shows that God is willing to listen to our grievance and criticism in the case of despair and anger.
The poem ends with the poet involvement in a desperate struggle with his own soul. he almost doubts whether the god exists art all and giver rebellious expression against the disciplines of the god.
