The Theme of The three caskets Analysis
Sigmund Freud's essay 'The Theme of The three caskets' proposes to answer, a universal question about the significance attributed to the number three in the course of human choices.
Freud comes up with a significant example from literature and fairy tales to Substituently is argument about the uniqueness of rubber three.
Freud mentions the Shakespearean plays The Merchant of Venice and Kinglear in which the third choice eventually becomes a significant one. Bassanio's choice of the lead Casket contains the portrait of Portia "kinglear's anger against the third daughter Cordelia eventually proofs to be a life-giving choice for him.
Freud expresses is a surprise at a commonality between both Shakespearian plays in which the third choice proves to be the most excellence once.
After references to literature Freud considers the example of Cinderella who is the third bride for the prince. The three different examples considered by Freud do not nearly possess the Common quality of "beauty". The peculiarity of the "third One", according to Freud psycho analysis is signified by death. Freud explains that the three women hear possess "A quality of dumbness".
In his theory of the interpretation of dreams, dumbness signifies death. He mentions the example of a man who once told him about the telepathic nature of dreams. The man said that saw in his dream a friend of his whom he had not seen for a long time. In addition, the friend had may no replies to his queries. Eventually, it turned out that his friend had died.
Thus it is implied that dumbness is an unmistakable indication of death.
Freud hypothesis at this stage is that the “third choice” which necessarily possesses the quality of dumbness ought to signify death. This argument is supported by the earliest Greek mythology.
Freud’s reference to myth suggests that this motive of assigning the special status to number three indicates a universal problem of the human psychic that is the understanding of literatures reflects the universality of the human psyche. The next stage of Freud’s observation reflects the human tendency to seek displacement of the unpleasant and the replacement of seek with the opposite.
Freud takes a recourse to psychoanalysis to understand muteness, dumbness, and silent expression of love. The direct application of the myth of the three sisters of fate consequently means that the third choice should be distractive as the third sister is a sister of death or destruction.
If the third sister is the goddess of the death, the Bassanio, Kinglier, and the prince who choose Portia, Cordelia and Cinderella should have become the victims of death. Freud's argument here is that no one chooses death consciously. Instant man always employs the faculty of the imagination to satisfied his wishes which are not satisfied in reality.
Thus the goddess of death is invariably replaced by the goddess of love. Freud calls this tendency “replacement, by a wishful opposite”.
